Shallow Water Lifeguarding Certification - 16565

Description:
Participants are expected to review Lifeguarding Manual prior to the first day of class. Registration with the American Red Cross is required. Once registered with FCPRD, you will be emailed a link to complete the American Red Cross registration. Both must be completed prior to attending the first session.
***** Participants must be present for the duration of all the sessions.
*****Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR and AED for the professional rescuer. Certification valid for 2 years

*****This is only a shallow water certification. Participants will be required to come back for the deep-water bridge portion of the certification if full lifeguarding certification is desired.
Bridge to Deep Water Date: 5/18/24 date is subject to change******

Prerequisites for Shallow Water portion:
1. Be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.
2. Swim 100 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. You may swim
using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not
allowed. Swim goggles may be used. Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should
place their hands under the armpits.
3. Complete a timed event within 50 seconds:
A. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
B. Submerge to a depth of 4 to 5 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and walk or swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object at the surface of the water.
C. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Prerequisites for Bridge to Deep Water portion: (scheduled at a later date)
The American Red Cross Lifeguarding course provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel takes over.
• Prerequisites: must be 15 years old at start of class
• Be able to swim 300 yards continuously
• Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
• Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds
• Starting in the water, swimming 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, exit the water without using steps or a ladder.
